Concealed vs Exposed Shower Mixers: How to Choose and Specify

DH4006 exposed shower mixer — product render

Every shower range has to answer the same question first: does the valve go inside the wall or on it? Concealed and exposed shower mixers do the same job, but they are sold to different customers, installed at different stages of a project and fail in different ways. Choosing the right mix for your market – and specifying each type correctly – avoids the most common shower returns.

What the terms mean

  • Concealed shower mixer – the valve body (the part with the cartridge and the water connections) is built into the wall. After tiling, only the trim plate and handle are visible. A concealed system usually includes separate outlets for an overhead shower, a hand shower or a bath spout, selected with a diverter.
  • Exposed shower mixer – the mixer body is mounted on the finished wall and connects to the hot and cold supply pipes through two wall connectors. The shower outlet, hose or rail is attached directly to the mixer.
  • Shower system or column – a complete set, usually an exposed mixer with a riser rail, an overhead shower and a hand shower, sold in one box.

Side-by-side comparison

Concealed Exposed
Look Clean wall, only the trim is visible Visible mixer body and pipes
When it is installed Valve body during construction, trim after tiling After the wall is finished
Best suited to New builds, full renovations, hotels and developments Replacement, rental properties, quick renovations
Installation skill Higher – depth, levels and sealing must be right before tiling Lower – fits standard wall connections
Maintenance access Through the trim; cartridge replaceable from the front Direct access to the whole mixer
Outlets Easy to combine overhead, hand shower and bath spout Usually one or two outlets

Specifying a concealed shower

With a concealed shower, most of the risk sits in the part the end customer never sees. Specify these points before you order:

  • Valve body included or not. Some concealed products are sold as trim only, to fit a universal in-wall body. Make clear whether the price includes the valve body and whether the same body fits all trims in the series – a universal body lets your customers change the trim style later without opening the wall.
  • Installation depth. Ask for the minimum and maximum finished wall depth the valve body can accept, including tiles and adhesive. Too little depth means the trim does not sit flat; too much means the cartridge stem does not reach the handle.
  • Number of outlets and diverter. A single-outlet mixer, a two-way diverter (for example overhead and hand shower) or a three-way diverter (adding a bath spout or body jets) are different products with different valve bodies.
  • Connections. Thread standard and pipe sizes for inlets and outlets, and whether stop valves are built in so the water can be shut off for servicing.
  • Protective cover and test plug. A plaster guard and a pressure-test plug make the installer’s work easier and protect the valve during construction.

For projects, ask for a full dimension drawing of the valve body with the trim, and share it with the installer before the walls are built. Wrong depth is the most common – and most expensive – concealed shower problem.

Specifying an exposed shower mixer

  • Wall connectors and centres. Exposed mixers connect through adjustable eccentric connectors. The standard distance between the hot and cold inlets differs by market, so confirm the centre distance and the adjustment range for your market.
  • Outlets. Whether the mixer has an outlet for a hose only, a bath spout as well, or a top outlet for a riser rail and overhead shower.
  • Hot surface. On a metal mixer body, the hot side can become hot to the touch. Some designs insulate the body; it is worth asking about for family and hotel use.
  • Wall fixing. For shower columns, the position and type of the rail bracket and how the rail adjusts in height.

Manual or thermostatic?

Both concealed and exposed mixers come in manual and thermostatic versions:

  • Manual mixers mix hot and cold through a single-lever or two-handle cartridge. They are simpler and cheaper, but the temperature changes if the pressure on one side changes – for example when a toilet is flushed elsewhere in the building.
  • Thermostatic mixers use a thermostatic cartridge that keeps the outlet temperature stable when supply pressure or temperature varies, and usually have a safety stop around 38°C that the user must press to go hotter. They are a strong selling point for families, care homes and hotels.

Thermostatic valves need a minimum supply pressure and temperature to work properly, and some have specific requirements for hot and cold pressure balance. Check that your market’s typical water system suits the product before stocking it – for example, low-pressure gravity systems are still common in parts of the UK.

Shower valves are also subject to market standards. In Europe, EN 1111 covers thermostatic mixing valves for high-pressure systems; in the United States and Canada, shower valves generally need to meet scald-protection requirements in ASSE 1016 as well as ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1. Confirm the requirement for your market and the certificate status of each model.

Which mix should you stock?

If your customers are mainly developers, hotels and contractors working on new builds, concealed systems with a universal valve body should be the centre of your range. If you sell to retail and renovation customers, exposed mixers and complete shower columns are easier to sell and install. Many distributors carry both in the same design language, so that a customer can choose the installation type without changing the look of the bathroom.

DACHENG’s shower systems include concealed mixer trims with and without diverters, exposed shower mixers, complete shower systems and a thermostatic shower system. You can compare the DH4000 Series, which offers exposed and concealed mixers in one design, review the dimension drawings, and send your configuration and quantities for a quotation.
